About us

Brief History

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BLUEBERRY TEAROOM

In 1938 two buildings were created , one a butcher’s, the other an abattoir to feed the butchers with local meat from the surrounding farms, which would today be very environmental friendly, providing quality produce reared by local farmers.

The butcher’s is now an upholstery outlet and the abattoir our Tearoom.

After the butcher’s and Abattoir closed a company called “Tinkler and Hudson” purchased them, the company sold mowers plus spares and mower repairs. They relocated from Derby when the Eagle Centre was built (now incorporated into Westfield shopping centre) being near the bus station and the old Cockpit Hill. They traded for several years and sold the butcher’s shop building and continued trading from the Tearoom building. When they sold the butcher’s they wisely kept the right for its customers to park in front of the butchers building (now the Upholstery shop) which is why our customers can park there.

On retirement the Tearoom was then sold to a butcher’s that had previously traded in Luke Lane, it was called the” Hairy Cow”. After a few years the owner had ill health and closed the business.

The building was then sold to a finance/leasing company who contemplated using it for offices. However they decided not to go ahead and put the building up for sale. The building stayed empty for several years and during a bad winter in 2010 all the pipes burst and flooded the car park.

This left the building in a very poor state of repair almost semi-derelict; John and Susan (both Engineers from University of Derby) restored the building for 12 months John doing most of the building work and joinery. It was opened for business in July 2012.

Blueberry Tearoom was featured in Derbyshire Life magazine.
